UCC's Youth Volunteer Corps was formed in June 2006 as a pre-college strategy with the goal of providing a consistent, committed volunteer force of local youth to improve the capacity of the agency's youth programs. It provides valuable opportunities for YVC members to develop job readiness, leadership and mentoring skills. In addition, Corps members have access to pre-college activities at UCC, where they participate in age-specific workshops on study skills, test preparation, financial aid assistance and applying for college, as well as visits to area universities and businesses. In addition, they learn study habits and skills, time management, and decision making and conflict resolution strategies.

- Open to incoming 9th Graders
Latinos Investing in Financial Education (LIFE)
Because it is never too early to learn and follow sound financial practices, high-school students in good academic standing have the opportunity to participate in the Latinos Investing in Financial Education (LIFE) workshop series. The program educates students about saving, investing, and spending money as well as financing a college education and pursuing various career tracks in business.
Students participating in the LIFE program develop a personal financial plan that includes short and long-term goals, including college and career plans and the financial strategies that will help their plans to fruition. The LIFE program also incorporates resources from Junior Achievement and the National Endowment for Finance Education (NEFE) curriculum.
Business and finance professionals are invited as guest speakers and can volunteer for workshops by contacting our UCC Community Relations Coordinator.
- Commitment length: Weekly, January through April
- Open to high school students [juniors and seniors preferred]
Youth Leadership Council (YLC)
The Youth Leadership Council challenges and empowers high-achieving students to become active leaders today by connecting them with helpful resources in their community and supporting students as they discover and employ their leadership potential. Weekly meetings foster students’ understanding of community resources and assets and provide opportunities to meet with city officials and adult leaders and plan events that foster civic engagement and volunteerism.
By linking students to a wide range of individuals and agencies in the community, YLC equips students to strive for excellence and become confident and competent young leaders.
- Commitment length: Fridays throughout the school year
- Open to high school students
