Lucas, Bruce Guadalupe Community School
At the beginning of fifth grade, Lucas was a very shy and quiet student. He would not raise his hand to share answers in front of the class nor did he participate in groups. Lucas participated in the After School Achievement Program before students shifted to distance learning. In the program, he focused on completing homework assignments and worked one-on-one with his teacher to master core school subjects.
In Lucas's online reading class, his teacher created virtual book clubs where students were split into groups and assigned different work. The book clubs met once a week to discuss the story and characters. His teacher noticed that Lucas felt more confident behind a screen. He would share his ideas and provide answers in his virtual reading group. With Lucas's continuous participation week after week, his reading comprehension skills improved. Lucas looks forward to middle school with more confidence in his reading skills and his own ideas.
