Cuidemos Nuestra Salud (America on the Move)

Inactivity, bad eating habits, and illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes are common barriers to healthy living in the Hispanic community, and this program taught participants how to take care of their health in a straightforward manner.

Cuidemos Nuestra Salud was a program that supported agencies in promoting the importance of nutrition and active living habits. Each organization used promotores de salud (health promoters) to address the obesity epidemic occurring in the Latino community in the United States.

The program consisted of a 2-hour charla (talk) presented in Spanish or English with Latino adults about nutrition and physical activity.

Goals

  • To promote healthy behaviors among Hispanics in Milwaukee through educational charlas about nutrition and physical activity specifically adapted to their age, language, environment, and culture
  • To train promotores to lead charlas in the Latino community
