Amparo, UCC Senior Center Client

AMPARO

Threading a Journey of Happiness.

Amparo, a 73-year old woman, lives with her adult daughter in the Milwaukee area. In 2023, Amparo’s daughter became concerned for her elderly mother who was crying every day; isolating herself; and not focusing on her life. Amparo greatly missed the warmth of her native Colombia and living in her own home. She was depressed and anxious.

Amparo’s daughter spoke with her Primary Care Provider, who referred her to United Community Center’s Elderly Program for a Memory Screening. At this evaluation, UCC staff noted that Amparo would greatly benefit from socialization at the UCC Senior Center. At first, Amparo was hesitant, but she agreed to go.

As soon as she started to attend the Senior Center, Amparo found a home in the sewing room. She formed new friendships with the other “sewing ladies” and began to smile more. The sewing club held fashion shows throughout the year – and Amparo even modeled some of her own designs! She also attended a Quinceanera celebration that the UCC Senior Center staff and participants created for the women who were not able to have this traditional “sweet 15” party as teenagers.

Shares a UCC staff member, “Compared to the first time we met Amparo, she is now attending every day with a glow, smiling, and enjoying being among her new friends.”

The dramatic shift in Amparo's demeanor has been a source of great joy and relief for her daughter, who now sees her mother thriving in an environment that respects and cherishes her heritage and talents.

Amparo's story highlights the profound impact that tailored community programs can have on the well-being of elderly individuals, offering them not just a place to pass time but a true second home filled with support, creativity, and companionship. Today, Amparo attends the Senior Center daily, her heart brimming with the warmth and happiness she once missed so dearly.
