Ashley
Supported Every Step of the Way.
When Ashley joined UCC schools, she was adjusting to a new school environment and increased academic expectations. As she entered sixth grade, she was quiet and reserved, often hesitant to speak up in class and still building confidence in her academic skills.
Early in her sixth-grade year, Ashley struggled most in math, earning low grades and needing additional support to stay engaged. Through UCC’s wraparound approach, combining in-class instruction, targeted interventions, and after-school programming, Ashley began to gain the consistency and encouragement she needed to move forward.
A key part of her growth came through UCC’s After-School Achievement Program (ASAP). In ASAP, Ashley receives individualized academic support and dedicated time to revisit challenging material. She regularly asks questions, seeks clarification on difficult concepts, and works through problems with growing confidence. With this support, her math performance steadily improved: from failing grades at the start of the year to consistent passing grades.
Ashley also found confidence and connection beyond the classroom through UCC athletics. As a member of the Cross-Country team, she developed perseverance, discipline, and a sense of belonging. Being part of a team helped Ashley build self-confidence and form positive relationships with peers and adults, reinforcing the idea that she is supported both academically and personally.
Today, Ashley is thriving as a sixth grader. She participates more actively in class, takes pride in her academic progress, and has emerged as a positive presence among her peers, encouraging others to ask for help and stay engaged. Her growth reflects UCC’s commitment to supporting students in every aspect of their development, ensuring they have the tools, relationships, and confidence to succeed.
