ANDERSON
Finding His Place in the Classroom.
Anderson joined UCC in August 2025 as a new five-year-old student and quickly faced the challenge of adjusting to a new school and a new learning environment. When he first arrived, he did not speak any English and was hesitant to communicate with classmates. Most days, he played alone and rarely participated during group activities.
Although Anderson came to UCC with strong math skills and solid letter and sound knowledge, learning in English and building connections with peers were difficult at first. He was unsure about speaking during lessons and needed support to feel comfortable in the classroom.
Through UCC’s English Language Learner supports and daily classroom instruction, Anderson received targeted language support while continuing to build on his academic strengths. As he learned daily routines and classroom expectations, he began to feel more comfortable participating in whole-group learning and classroom activities.
By late October and early November, Anderson began interacting more with classmates during play and lunch. He also started applying his growing English skills during classroom activities, including matching English words to their beginning sounds during the class “I Spy” game.
One of the most meaningful changes has been in Anderson’s ability to express himself. During morning meeting, he now shares his feelings more confidently. Recently, before recess, Anderson shared, “I am happy because I love my class.” Earlier in the year, he was only able to say that he was happy without explaining why.
Today, Anderson is becoming a more confident learner and communicator. With the support of UCC’s ELL services and a welcoming classroom environment, he is building friendships, participating in learning, and developing the language skills he needs to continue succeeding.
