From Silence to Self-Advocacy - A Transformative Journey
Joel first joined UCC Acosta Middle School in the summer of 2024 as a sixth grader after transferring from a local school. Before the school year began, he participated in a summer session alongside other Acosta Middle School students, giving him the opportunity to meet his teachers and become familiar with United Community Center. When he started middle school, he was quiet and struggled to understand and follow directions on assignments. After completing summer orientation, his teacher decided to enroll him in reading intervention at the beginning of the school year to help improve his reading skills.
In collaboration with his teachers and counselors, a tailored approach was created to support Joel. He began working with a reading interventionist in September, focusing on fundamental reading skills such as phonics and fluency. In addition to working with the interventionist, Joel met with an English Language Learner teacher. Through small group instruction, one-on-one sessions, and personalized support, he began to flourish in the classroom. By the end of Quarter 2, his grades had improved, and his teachers noticed significant progress in his comprehension and engagement.
Joel now eagerly participates in class discussions, confidently raising his hand to answer questions and reading aloud from the board, even when he encounters challenges. His confidence has soared, enabling him to assist his peers and effectively advocate for himself with the support of his school counselor. The school environment has become a safe space where he feels comfortable speaking up and seeking help.
This newfound self-assurance has empowered Joel to become a more effective self-advocate in the classroom. Previously, he remained silent and often left assignments incomplete. Through targeted interventions and personalized support, Joel has experienced significant growth academically, socially, and emotionally.
