Creating a Game Plan

Upon entering High School at St. Thomas Moore, Sam was looking forward to playing on the school’s basketball team but realized his low GPA his freshman year would make him ineligible to play on the team that winter.

As a graduate of Bruce-Guadalupe Middle School, Sam was aware of UCC’s Pre-College program and turned to the advisors of that program for support with his academics. Sam needed a reminder of the importance of academic eligibility in order to continue his basketball career. He met with an advisor of the Pre-College program, who had also been a student-athlete, to come up with a plan to address his poor grades. Sam stayed committed to the Pre-College Program and attended socials, workshops, open gym dates, and other events throughout the last couple of years. He even coordinated an open gym day because he knew there was going to be a scout attending his practice at school the following week.

Since seeking out the help of UCC’s Pre-College Program, Sam has continued to maintain sports eligibility, and not just during the sports season. He demonstrated consistent effort throughout the academic year. He is currently exploring possible career interests and college options. As his junior year at St. Thomas More wraps up, it is clear Sam will continue to do what it takes to achieve his goals in the future.
